This is a comprehensive two-day course which enables participants to become more willing, ready and able to help persons at risk of suicide. Approved by the World Health Organisation, ASIST is a standardised, certified programme teaching a robust model of suicide intervention. Although ASIST is widely used by healthcare providers, participants don’t need any formal training to attend the workshop.
The aim of the course is to allow participants:
- To increase the comfort zone of learners.
- Allow safe exploration of attitudes and experiences.
- Consider various myths about suicide.
- Build relationships within teams.
- Address needs of different client groups.
- Provide a shared model of suicide intervention.
Participants may include but is not limited to, Managers, Supervisors or Officers from Security Teams, or any front-line staff such as Residential Advisors, Student Support Services, Hall Wardens etc. Delegates may attend either or both courses and will be given accredited certificates of attendance.
This course and the MHFR 1 day course on 14 May, will be held at the University of Gloucestershire, Oxstalls Campus and are currently offered free of charge to AUCSO members, but does not include accommodation, evening meals or travel.

Course places will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis and limited to 5 per institution though further spaces may be released if available nearer the date.
Members must book travel and accommodation for each delegate as required. Recommended hotels:
- Premier Inn Gloucester (Longford) (15-20 min walk or 10 min drive to venue), with Beefeater Inn adjacent.
- IBIS Gloucester 20-30 min walk or 10 min drive.
There are lots of other hotels across the city etc with similar commutes. Some people may prefer to stay near the quays to enjoy the restaurants/pubs in the evening.
